The European Union is treating the Western Balkans six as privileged partners. The future of the region is in the EU and it is important that this message is conveyed correctly, the European enlargement commissioner, Oliver Varhelyi, stated before the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET).
During the meeting that was presided over by the president of AFET, David McAllister, Varhelyi presented the results of the EU-Western Balkans summit and the EU's support to the Western Balkans in the fight against COVID-19.
The commissioner informed AFET about the Zagreb Declaration and the EU's financial assistance to the Western Balkans in the fight against the epidemic and its consequences.
Varhelyi also informed the Committee about the planned investment package for the Western Balkans, which should be adopted in autumn, stressing that it represented a long-term plan for recovery, jobs, growth, trade. He also said that regional cooperation and a joint market based on EU principles were important for the economic recovery of the region.
