Marijan Ivanusa, the head of the World Health Organization’s office in Serbia, said on May 13 that the second wave of the coronavirus infection is quite likely to arrive in autumn.

“We hope that the summer will be relatively peaceful, but it is extremely likely that [the virus] will return in autumn, while some peaks can also be expected during the summer,” Ivanusa told the RTS public service.

He also said that now it is much more essential than before to respect the prescribed protective measures, especially in places where many people gather – in public transport, cafes, restaurants and similar, which, according to him are “the most dangerous situations.”

The reason for that is that over 90 percent of people are still very sensitive to the virus and if they get in touch with it, they will contract the disease again.

“In other words, the more we socialize, go to work and restaurants, the probability to get in touch with the virus is higher, and because of that, unfortunately, the number of those affected may go up rapidly,” Ivanusa said.

He added that the Serbian health system had responded to the infection excellently. “The capacities were sufficient, since the system has been shifted to [deal with] Covid-19. Thus, for the time being, everything passed well. We see that the capacities for testing, monitoring and - of course - isolation, when needed, are adequate,” Ivanusa said.
