The Belgrade Hospital for Infectious and Tropical Diseases director, Goran Stevanovic, on May 19 said that any percentage of new coronavirus cases below five percent of the total tested people was a satisfying figure requiring no engagement of new capacities to treat patients.
He told TV Prva that a rise in Covid-19 cases was expected following the easing of countermeasures, but was not worrisome.
“Today, we are not talking about opening new Covid-19 centers, but about shutting down the existing ones,” Stevanovic said, adding that certain temporary hospitals would remain “on standby” and at the ready to admit potential patients.
According to Stevanovic, the Hospital for Infectious Diseases is currently treating 73 coronavirus patients, including 12 on intensive care and four on ventilators. He confirmed that there were still patients with severe Covid-19, but fewer than at the time of the outbreak.
Stevanovic said that an end to the epidemic in Serbia could be declared only after no new Covid-19 cases were reported for 28 days.
