People’s Party Vice-President Sandra Raskovic-Ivic reiterated on June 3 that it suits Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to have the elections held on June 21, because the effects of his “coronavirus campaign and saviour’s halo” are still being felt.

She added that the authorities do not dare postpone the vote for autumn as then it will become clear how much the economy has suffered from the epidemic and how many people have returned from abroad and now have no job in Serbia.

Raskovic-Ivic, who is a psychiatrist and professor at the High Vocational Medical College in Belgrade, said that “the campaign Vucic is leading in his official capacity affects reason,” adding that “he has not only imposed himself as a savior who salvages a child from snow heaps in Feketic and Obrenovac citizens from flood waters, but also saves from coronavirus, boards planes [to procure medical equipment], and distributes masks and ventilators.”

“His conduct is inappropriate and affects mental health, as it is not proper for the president of a state to say that people will die in great numbers and there would be no cemeteries to bury them, shortly after claiming that ‘the virus cannot harm us, since we are stronger than nature,’ and then introducing a state of emergency to prevent the ‘massive loss of life’.” It is a mental see-saw and the people were incapable of processing such opposites,” Raskovic-Ivic said.

She added that German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Queen Elisabeth II, and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern addressed the people with much caution, motherly care and great encouragement, without a word that would scare them, while Vucic kept instilling fear into Serbia’s citizens.
