Election rallies, gathering a large number of people, posed the risk of spreading the coronavirus in Serbia, the epidemiologist and retired professor, Zoran Radovanovic, told BETA on June 9.
Radovanovic said that parties should stop organizing mass election rallies as the number of new Covid-19 cases in the past month indicated that the epidemic curve had not been showing a decline.
“The first wave has not been over yet and for four, five weeks now, the epidemic curve has not been showing a drop. The number of new cases per day has been ranging between 25 and 144 indicating that some countermeasures have been lifted too soon. If the number of new cases increases, it will fall under the first wave with two peaks, like a Bactrian camel,” he specified.
According to Radovanovic, with the election campaign ongoing, the authorities wish to present a picture to the public where everything appears to be beautiful, peaceful and safe. “Two nights ago, I saw an endless line of buses parked in downtown Belgrade. Someone has brought a large number of people for an election rally. Those ‘wretched souls’ were exposed to a higher risk of catching the disease on those buses, than in the open,” Radovanovic stressed.
