Membership in the European Union is supported by 59 percent of people in the Western Balkans, which is more than in the previous years, while unemployment remains the biggest problem for many of those interviewed, according to the results of the Balkan Barometer survey, carried out by the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC), which were presented on June 24.

In the presentation of the results via an on-line conference, the general secretary of RCC, Majlinda Bregu, said that the people's positive opinion of EU membership was 20 percent higher compared with 2015, when the first Balkan Barometer survey was carried out.

The Balkan Barometer is the annual public opinion survey carried out by the RCC, which gathers and analyzes information from the population and from companies in the Western Balkans, about subject fields such as employment, trading, investments, corruption and others.

Bregu stated that 45 percent of the people viewed unemployment as the biggest problem and that a significant decline in confidence in the institutions was also registered. The survey showed that 71 percent of the people believed that their governments were not successful in fighting corruption, up from 61 percent in 2018, Bregu explained.
