The president of the Belgrade City Assembly, Nikola Nikodijevic, stated on July 2 that new epidemiological measures should be expected in the capital.

The measures, he explained, are intended to protect the people's health, as well as the economy. Nikodijevic told the Serbian Broadcasting Corporation (RTS) that the city's Crisis Task Force had not considered the introduction of an emergency situation in Belgrade in response to the rising number of new infections in the previous few days.

"One has to approach the issue of measures in Belgrade with special awareness. We must protect lives, but must not jeopardize economic activity. The final decision will be made by experts in consultation with the Serbian president," Nikodijevic said.

He added that 96 percent of passengers on the city public transport were wearing masks, which is "a fantastic result" for Belgrade and Serbia in general. He announced that "the four percent of irresponsible people who do not wear masks and jeopardize themselves and the 96 percent who honor the measures, will be sanctioned if they continue to violate the measures."

"We, as the City of Belgrade, cannot charge fines, but that will be done in cooperation with the sanitation inspection of the Ministry of Health, which has jurisdiction in such cases," Nikodijevic explained.
