Seven civil society organizations in Serbia on July 14 called on the EU to stay true to its founding values and rules and demand concrete results in the implementation of the rule of law and fundamental democratic principles in Serbia.

“In the light of the recent events, we believe that our messages bear more relevance than ever before. Unless serious effort is invested into improving the state of democracy in Serbia and returning a dialogue to legitimate institutions, where it belongs, the current crisis could deteriorate, while Serbia’s path toward the EU could be jeopardized in the coming years,” it is said in an open letter the seven NGOs addressed to the EU institutions.

The letter says that “only a democratic Serbia, strongly relying on democratic institutions, will be able to resolve its open regional issues, while those who claim differently, do not care about the stability of Serbia or the region,” it is published on the European Policy Center’s website.

The letter has been signed by the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy, the Belgrade Fund for Political Excellence, the Centre for Contemporary Politics, European Movement in Serbia, the European Policy Center, the International and Security Affairs Centre (ISAC), and the Lawyers’ Committee for Human Rights (YUCOM).
