Serbia may face an army of nearly a million jobless people if the government doesn't find a way to support national economy with a new package of financial and other measures, responding to the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic, president of the Trade Union "Independence" Zoran Stojiljkovic warned on July 15.
"The Socioeconomic Council demands that a new government be inaugurated as soon as possible, in order to discuss additional assistance to the most vulnerable companies, without which 200,000 workers who are about to lose their jobs and some 100.000 returnees will join half a million jobless people in Serbia," Stojiljkovic said.
The trade union leader suggested that the government should offer financial assistance to the companies whose production went down by 15 to 20 percent, not to everyone. "Other states, too, have continued to support their economies after the first three months of the pandemic-induced crisis," Stojiljkovic said.
