US President Donald Trump has said that his country will put off implementation of reciprocal tariffs for all trading partners across the world until Aug. 1, while this period would be used for additional negotiations for to ensure the most favorable conditions for trade cooperation between Serbia and the US, the Serbian Chamber of Commerce said in a release on July 8.
Trump has earlier announced that the US will charge Serbia a 35 percent tariff on any Serbian product, starting Aug. 1, but left the room for changing the 35 percent number depending on Belgrade’s future decisions regarding trade collaboration with the US.
“Our relationship has been, unfortunately, far from reciprocal,” Trump said in a letter to Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, adding in conclusion that “you will never be disappointed with the USA.” Trump also said that his administration had concluded that the US “must move away from these longterm and very persistent trade deficits engendered by Serbia’s Tariff and Non Tariff, Policies and Trade Barriers.”
“Starting on Aug. 1, 2025, we will charge Serbia a tariff of only 35 percent on any and all Serbian products sent into the US, separate from all sectoral tariffs. Goods transshipped to evade a higher tariff will be subject to that higher tariff. Please understand that the 35 percent number is far less than what is needed to eliminate the trade deficit disparity we have with your country,” Trump wrote.
The US president also said that there would be no tariff is Serbia, or companies within Serbia decided to build or manufacture product within the US. He also stressed that if Serbia decided to raise its tariff, “then, whatever the number you choose to raise them by, will be added onto the 35 percent that we charge.”
