Kosovo Minister of Interior and Public Administration Agim Veliu has said that the agreement on cooperation between Kosovo and Europol, signed on July 27, will provide Kosovo police with the support they need to crack down on transnational crime, thus closing the gap that existed.

Veliu said that this would "strengthen security not only in Kosovo, but in the entire region and beyond." He went on to say that the Western Balkan region and all of Europe faced many threats and that an effective fight against organized crime and terrorism required international cooperation.

"These groups know no borders and attempt to use any space for their criminal activities. Kosovo police had been pretty handicapped due to a lack of exchange of real-time information. As it is known, until now the exchange of information had gone through EULEX, which resulted in delays," said Veliu.

The signing ceremony was attended by Kosovo Premier Avdullah Hoti, Head of EU Office in Kosovo Nataliya Apostolova and Kosovo Police Director Rashit Qalaj.
