Epidemiologist Predrag Kon said on Oct. 5 that, since the school year began, random cases of COVID-19 have been registered in 24 elementary, and nine high schools, and that the transmission of the virus within schools was noted in only in two of these.

Speaking for the Happy TV, Kon called these “acceptable numbers” and said that he expects that schools will continue to operate as they have been since September. According to him, schools are safer places than larger collectives, where it is impossible to have full control over the adherence to the COVID-19 preventive measures.

Kon also said that the first reported numbers of the COVID-19-related deaths were accurate, but that the mortality rate has to be revised in order “to see what was actually going on.”

Had the mortality rate at the beginning of the epidemic been higher, he said, “the measures would’ve likely been the same,” but they also would have probably been longer in effect.

When asked how the immunization should be carried out, once the COVID-19 vaccine becomes available, Kon said that he believes it should be strongly advised for those from whom it is necessary.
