The European Movement in Serbia stated on Oct. 5 that 20 years after a democratic change on Oct. 5, 2000, Serbia was far away from the world it aspired to when it returned to it in a symbolic and formal way by joining the United Nations.

"Deeply divided into those following the government's politics and those opposed to it, without an opportunity for a democratic dialogue in either a one-party parliament or in a strictly controlled media landscape, Serbia is increasingly distant from a liberal democracy. The rule of law, the freedom of speech and expression are threatened, the institutions of the system are captured and the foreign policy unclear," the Movement has warned in a press release.

The organization has also underlined that relations with the neighbors are burdened with bilateral disputes, while the words of government officials are upsetting, evoking the rhetoric believed to have crashed on Oct. 5, 2000.
