Military Union of Serbia head Novica Antic has met with Tanja Fajon, chairperson of the European Parliament's Delegation for Serbia's stabilization and association, to discuss pressure and obstruction impeding unionizing, the dismissal of general secretary Predrag Jevtic and the suppression of human and worker's rights.

According to an Oct. 23 press release issued by the Union, Antic acquainted Fajon with examples of "obstruction and prevention" of unionizing and the "forms of pressure" the union has been under during the administration of outgoing Defense Minister Aleksandar Vulin.

The statement noted that Fajon would report on the matter to the institutions and parliament of the European Union and do everything in her power to "help [the Union] protect its representatives and exercise the rights guaranteed by European regulations and the conventions of the International Labor Organization."

"The poor image of the state of civic and workers' rights and freedoms that certain representatives of executive government are sending out into the world is not contributing to the progress of Serbia, an EU member candidate, and that was the joint conclusion of the meeting," the press release read further.

The meeting, called at the initiative of the European Federation of Public Service Unions, to which the Military Union of Serbia belongs, took place late on Oct. 22 via video conferencing.
