Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said in Eastern Sarajevo that any attempt to bring down the Dayton Peace Agreement would be risky and could have grave consequences.
“The Dayton Accords have established a fragile balance, every element of that system is very important and without one element in place, the entire system could be jeopardized and could pose a threat to the entire stability,” Lavrov told a news conference in the evening on Dec. 14, after meeting top Republika Srpska officials.
According to the Russian minister, the Dayton Peace Agreement is the basis for the functioning of Bosnia and Herzegovina, wherein the equality of its two entities and three constituent peoples should be honored.
“Russia is one of the guarantors of the Dayton Agreement and it respects the Dayton principles of Bosnia’s internal organization. We urge all, both, internal and external factors, to honor the founding principles,” Lavrov stressed, adding that all problems in Bosnia should be settled through compromise solutions and dialogue and without interference of external factors in Bosnia’s internal affairs.
Lavrov is scheduled to visit Belgrade on Dec. 15, where he is to meet with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and other state officials. In Serbia’s capital, Lavrov will also attend the lighting of the eternal flame at the Cemetery of Belgrade Liberators and visit the Saint Sava Church.
