Minister of Finance Sinisa Mali has said that the payment of one-off 5,000 dinar aid to pensioners began in the morning on Dec. 17, calling it "the crown of the economic package" of measures the Serbian government came out with back in March this year, when the coronavirus epidemic broke out.

The government earmarked six billion euros this year for helping the economy and the population, Mali told Pink TV.

He said that thanks to the state's enormous aid, Serbia had avoided the bleak scenario that could be seen in other countries - no factories were being shut down and there were no mass layoffs.

"Serbia has shown how resistant to crisis it is. This crisis has shown who can and who knows, and who does not know. So I will be very open, numerous countries in the region have not reacted in the right way or perhaps have not reacted at all where the economy is concerned, in no way have they ensured conditions for their economy to survive the coronavirus," said Mali.
