Vucic To Spend Christmas Eve and Day in the Hilandar Monastery

President Aleksandar Vucic would be spending Orthodox Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Jan. 6 and 7, in the Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos, Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti reported on Jan. 5.

According to the daily, this will be the first official visit to the Hilandar Monastery of Serbia’s head of state in the past two decades.

Vucic will attend a dinner on Christmas Eve and an early morning service at 2 am, the daily wrote, adding that the president should also attend Christmas Day liturgy and bow before the icons in the Treasury of the Hilandar Monastery.

Vucic is also to talk with Abbot Metodije of the Hilandar Monastery, who will tell him about the life of monks and the renovation works on the monastery, which was severely damaged in a fire in 2004.

According to daily sources, Vucic is willing to allocate more funds for to step up the restoration works on the Hilandar Monastery. The Serbian president, the daily wrote, did not require any special treatment during his stay in Mount Athos.

Vucic’s predecessor Tomislav Nikolic paid several private visits to the Hilandar Monastery during his term in office.
