Serbian Flag

On the occasion of Serbia’s Statehood Day, a Serbian flag was raised before the City Hall in the Canadian capital city of Ottawa on Feb. 15, a sign of respect rarely shown to any country in this way.

Serbian Ambassador in Canada Dejan Ralevic thanked Ottawa’s longtime Mayor Jim Watson on this gesture of friendship.

The most famous world waterfalls on the Niagara River were illuminated in the red, blue and white colors of the Serbian flag the same day and for the second time in a row.

Although the illumination of the Niagara Falls began back in 1925, with the illumination technology upgraded in 1997 and 2016, recognizing another country and its people in this manner happened for the first time in Canadian history.

A video congratulating the Statehood Day to all citizens of Serbia at home, and those living in Canada and around the world, was posted on the Serbian Embassy in Canada’s website and social networks.

In the video, congratulations were extended by David Sproule, a director in the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati, as well as Ambassador Ralevic and Serbia’s general consul in Toronto, Vasilije Petkovic.
