In Serbia, more than two million people were at risk of poverty or social exclusion, 500,000 people lived in extreme poverty as they did not have enough money to meet the basic needs, while the number of welfare users had been reducing, Center for Democracy Foundation researcher Sarita Bradas said on March 2.
Commenting on the Social Card Law, which took effect on March 1, Bradas told BETA news agency that in 2019, social support had been provided to 226,897, 10 percent down from 2012.
Bradas said that in relation to social inclusion and protection, EU Serbia Progress Reports had been for years now repeating the same assessment that the scope and adequacy of welfare checks were insufficient to meet the basic needs.
She added that it meant that most of the poor did not receive social support, while those receiving welfare checks could not even meet the basic needs.
