In a letter he sent on April 1 to the members of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Milorad Dodik, Sefik Dzaferovic and Zeljko Komsic, U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken declared that the U.S. believed that Bosnia should commit to the implementation of limited, but significant constitutional amendments.
"The U.S. believes that focus should be on the carrying out of limited, but significant constitutional, electoral and economic reforms and the rule of law, in order to secure the rights of all citizens in the electoral process," Blinken wrote in the letter, adding that there would be no Dayton 2.
He assessed that Bosnia should improve the integrity of the judiciary, reduce the scope of corruption, step economic recovery up and start restoring the people's trust in the institutions. "That is a feasible goal, which only calls for the political will to make the necessary compromises," the U.S. secretary of state wrote.
He advised Dodik, Dzaferovic and Komsic that their leadership would be necessary for a serious and veritable process. "The U.S. will be a partner in these efforts, but the leaders in Bosnia and Herzegovina will have to work hard. I call on you to seriously join this process, in order to dedicate these issues the attention they deserve," Blinken pointed out.
