The newly elected Kosovo president, Vjosa Osmani, said in the evening on April 4, that justice will not be served until Serbia is held accountable for the crimes committed in Kosovo.
She added that Kosovo is facing a dialogue in which both sides have to be on equal footing. “Peace may only be reached when Serbia shows remorse, when it asks for forgiveness and when justice has been reached for those who suffered because of its crimes,” Osmani said, as quoted by Radio Free Europe.
Osmani listed the U.S., EU and Albania as Kosovo’s most important allies, and added that as the head of her country she is urging all politicians to cooperate and show tolerance.
She promised to work on “strengthening the state, [and] the rule of law” and to “protect every inch of the land.” “I’ll be the president of all. Our numbers are not high enough for us to be divided into ‘us’ and ‘them.’ My door will be open to everyone,” Osmani pointed out.
Osmani was elected as the new president of Kosovo in the third round of voting. Out of the 82 MPs present, 71 voted for her, while 11 votes were invalid.
