In the last 24 hours, 11 people died of COVID-19 in Serbia, while 376 were confirmed to be newly infected with the coronavirus that causes the disease, the Serbian Health Ministry said in a press release on May 24.

Hospital care is being provided for 1,201 COVID patients, 68 of whom require assisted ventilation. Since the beginning of the COVID epidemic in Serbia, the disease has killed 6,788 people, 710,315 have been infected with the virus, and 4.086.694 samples have been tested.

Epidemiologist Branislav Tiodorovic said between 60 and 70 percent of the population would have to be vaccinated before there could be "a return to normal life," the May 24 issue of the Blic daily reported.

Belgrade Deputy Mayor Goran Vesic said on May 24 that more than 683,000 residents of the Serbian capital -- or 48.4 percent, had been vaccinated to date. Vesic visited Belgrade's Stark Arena, which is no longer part of the COVID system and is returning to its usual function. He said the Arena would be ready to host sports events in seven days.
