U.S. Special Representative for the Western Balkans Matthew Palmer said on June 4 that Serbia needed to make progress in the domains of democracy and freedom of the media.
"Serbia must make progress in the areas of democracy and the freedom of the media, as well as protecting civil society. What I want to emphasize by meeting with representatives of civil associations and the opposition is that there is U.S. support for democracy, free elections and an independent media," Palmer said in an interview with the N1 TV station.
The U.S. diplomat said that, for the U.S., mutual recognition between Belgrade and Pristina remained the ultimate goal, but that Washington supported other modalities of agreement as well, if agreed by the two sides.
Palmer said that non-papers suggesting border changes in the Western Balkans "don't deserve any attention at all," dismissing claims that the new High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina would work against Republika Srpska. The U.S. official said that his country strongly supported the territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and that "there is no room for stories of disintegration, or Republika Srpska's secession."
