Serbian Minister of Interior Aleksandar Vulin said on June 25 that it was not up to the police whether Serbia would extradite Svetozar Marovic, convicted of corruption in Podgorica, to Montenegro. Marovic is a former president of the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro and a former senior official of the Democratic Party of Socialists.
"Whether Svetozar Marovic will be extradited to Montenegro or not depends on the outcome of the proceeding being conducted before the competent courts in Serbia, not on the police," Vulin said in a written statement to Montenegrin Parliament Speaker Aleksa Becic, the Ministry of Interior said.
The media recently reported that more than five months later, the Serbian Ministry of Justice still had not responded to its Montenegrin counterpart's repeated request for Marovic's extradition.
Marovic has been in Belgrade for more than four years, where, according to his legal representatives, he is receiving medical treatment.
Three months ago, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that Marovic's extradition was a complicated matter.
