Virologist Milanko Sekler said on July 1 that it is more important to keep in mind that the COVID-19 virus is still present and active and observe the measures, than follow the numbers of the newly infected.
He told the RTS public service that the anti-epidemic measures – wearing masks indoors, physical distancing and limiting the number of people in closed spaces – are still in effect, but that fewer and fewer people adhere to them. The return to normalcy seems to be more important than safety and application of measures, he added.
“Oftentimes, when I walk into a store, I’m the only person wearing a mask,” Sekler said. He added that the virus had survived in the warm weather and warned that in the fall the danger will be even greater as more people crowd in closed spaces.
Commenting on the variants and new strains of the virus, such as the latest variant called delta, he emphasized that the vaccine is effective against them, and that those who have been inoculated do not have to worry. The virologist also said that now special attention has to be paid to the working age population (18-40) and its vaccination, as the highest number of unvaccinated individuals in Serbia falls into that age group.
