The Hague court's sentencing of Serbian secret service chiefs Jovica Stanisic and Franko Simatovic has for the first time demonstrated the role of the Serbian leadership in crimes in the Balkan wars of the 1990s, the July 1 edition of Moscow's Kommersant daily has said.

The paper said that the process was the longest in the tribunal's history and that it was also the last. "The current process is interesting, in addition to its length, because for the first time the role of the Serbian leadership during the wars of the 1990s was proved," the daily said.

It added that prior to that the court had sentenced politicians and soldiers in Croatia and Bosnia - Serbs, Croats and Muslims who directly participated in the conflict.
