The pulmonologist Dejan Zujovic said on July 12 that vaccination of the population had "totally" failed and that a considerable spike in new COVID-19 cases was expected in August.
Zujovic told BETA that not even 40 percent of the population had been fully immunized, which meant that, not counting the 700,000 who have recovered from COVID, around 50 percent of the population remained exposed to the novel coronavirus with no protection.
"Vaccination did not succeed because it went awry from the very beginning. It is also unsuccessful because it was presented as something political, as a win for the Serbian Progressive Party and its president. And let's not forget that, when vaccination start, pro-regime media outlets even called out people waiting in line to get vaccinated if they weren't part of the regime," Zujovic said.
He added that vaccination should have been an interest of the state, not of political parties. "Vaccination should have been bolstered by educating the population. Instead, the government allowed anti-vaxxers to run amok. Finally, the government started offering money for vaccination. They estimated the character of the average Serb at a mere RSD3,000, which was demeaning," Zujovic said.
