Vucic Erdogan (Presidency of Serbia/Dimitrije Goll)
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on July 21 that, according to the Washington Agreement, both Belgrade and Pristina are obliged to refrain from campaigning for withdrawals, i.e. lobbying for the recognition of Kosovo's independence. He also said that Serbia would do everything to protect its interests, if the other side violated that agreement.
Vucic said this during a visit to the Manasija Monastery, when asked to comment on allegations in the media that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had launched a political offensive aimed at promoting the independence of Kosovo.
"Erdogan is a great leader. I will try to talk with him. Until Sept. 1, we are all obliged to refrain from lobbying but if they start before that... Turkey is a great power, Erdogan is great, I am small and negligible, but Serbia is not so small that it would not attempt to stand up to that," said Vucic.
He added that "this is not Turkish" and that Serbia had no other choice but to fight for its country and people. "And you will see that we are not as small as I sometimes say," Vucic said.
