The majority of Serbian citizens are in favor of joining the European Union and see the EU as the leading donor and trade and investment partner, shows an opinion poll conducted by Ninamedia for the EU Delegation in Serbia, unveiled on July 26.
The poll shows that 54 percent of the respondents support Serbia's accession to the EU, while one third of the respondents are against it, the EU Info Center stated.
If only those who would express their opinion were counted, a referendum would lead to a result of 62 percent for and 38 percent against EU accession. Young people (aged 18-29) account for more than two thirds of the population's pro-European segment.
When asked how they would vote if a referendum on Serbia's accession to the EU were held today, 52.3 percent of the respondents replied "for," while 32.6 percent chose "against." The option of abstaining from voting was chosen by 8.4 percent of the respondents, 6.2 percent said they were not sure, whereas 0.5 percent refused to give an answer.
The survey also shows that Serbian citizens see the EU in a predominantly positive light and connect it with possibilities and progress, a better economic standard, the possibility of free travel, respect for human rights etc.
