Former presidential candidate and ombudsman Sasa Jankovic has said that opposition parties need to support a single candidate in Serbian presidential elections, but that the entire opposition was not needed for that.

"Everyone not formally in the government is called the opposition, even if this bad government does not want him or is ashamed of him, or if he is of better use to them that way. A good candidate would have to thank 'opposition leaders' of that kind for their support and refuse it, if he has the integrity needed to run the country," Jankovic told the Aug. 19 edition of the Nova newspaper.

Jankovic said that, as a presidential candidate, he was criticized a lot for not wanting "everyone's support." "Hopefully today, three or four years later, it is clearer to everyone why. Some 'opposition people' will never support the best candidate, precisely because they want to create an impression that there is no "unity,'" Jankovic said.
