In the last 24 hours, 19 people died of COVID-19 in Serbia, while 4,103 of the 16,449 tested were positive for the virus that causes the disease, it was announced on Sept. 6.
There are currently 1,571 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, 110 of whom are on ventilators. According to the records of the Serbian Ministry of Health, since the beginning of the epidemic, 783,826 people have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in Serbia, while 7,398 have died.
The virologist Milanko Sekler said on Sept. 6 that "the idea of vaccination" against COVID-19 was not to prevent illness, but to remove the risk of dying of it for the infected. He reiterated for the Serbian Broadcasting Corporation that vaccination was "the only way out" of the COVID-19 epidemic and that unvaccinated citizens were jeopardizing their own health, and could easily catch the infection from children.
Sekler said it was not schools that were hotspots, but "overfilled sports halls, big parties and celebrations," because there people do not wear masks or keep their distance.
