Belgrade Pride Organizing Committee member Goran Miletic on Sept. 7 said he was convinced that an act on same-sex couples would be adopted this or next year as it was Serbia’s international commitment.

“The legal text is ready, it only needs to be adopted in the parliament,” Miletic told Belgrade daily Danas, adding that halts in the adoption process was bad news for both, the LGBT+ community and all Serbia’s citizens.

He explained that the work on the act had been halted due to “Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic’s interpretation of the Constitution, although Serbia has the Constitutional Court which could give its opinion on the matter.”

“Instead, it seems that the president gets to decide on everything and that the bill will be passed when he decides so. It is a bad message because Serbia’s citizens belonging to this community have been still facing very realistic and daily problems which could be solved with some will,” Miletic stressed. He added that the act “will not cost neither the citizens nor the state,” while it would mean a lot for LGBT people.

Miletic said that this year’s Pride Week would be held from Sept. 12 to 19, with the traditional Pride Parade scheduled for Sept. 18.
