Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic told Belgrade media that German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s upcoming visit to the capital is vastly important to Serbian interests.

“We will be hosting the woman who governs Serbia’s most significant trading partner. The total value of trade [between our two countries] has increased 25.1 percent compared to last year, while [our total] trade in the first seven months of this year was 3.57 billion. The difference between Germany and other countries keeps growing from one year to the next,” Vucic told a news conference in the evening of Sept. 8.

Vucic said that Merkel, who will be visiting Belgrade on Sept. 13, will spend most of her trip to the Western Balkans in Serbia and will meet the country’s top officials, while her meetings in neighboring countries will be “only with representatives of civil society”, aside from her scheduled talk in Tirana with representatives from the whole region.

Vucic also stated that, in the three or four days prior to Merkel’s arrival, he would be visiting Turkey for talks with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, followed by a meeting with the leaders of the Visegrad Group in Budapest.

On Sept. 29 and 30, Serbia will also be hosting European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Vucic said.
