Former Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Zivkovic said on Sept. 21 that the replacement of the status-neutral ‘KS’ Kosovo license plates in North Kosovo was part of the agreement that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic had signed with the Albanians five years prior, adding that the current situation was a result of Vucic’s politics.

Zivkovic, who is also a former head of the Serbian New Party, told the Danas daily that the “shock and astonishment” of the current authorities in Belgrade at the Kosovo police entering North Kosovo and seizing the ‘KS’ license plates at the border crossing with Serbia, “can only mean that Vucic has realized, after five years, that he had made a mistake by signing the agreement” and that only he is to blame.

“That’s why he is now trying to play the savior of the Serbs and all things Serbian, but we know that whenever Vucic, [Ivica] Dacic, and [Aleksandar] Vulin, as well as their mentors, [Slobodan] Milosevic and [Vojislav] Seselj, have decided to defend the Serbs, there were no Serbs left afterwards. This is why I fear for the Serbs in Kosovo whom Vucic is trying to defend,” Zivkovic said.

According to the former prime minister, the National Security Council’s emergency session which Vucic had called for because of the situation in North Kosovo, “is just another farce and an indicator that even Vucic himself has come to realize that he had made a mistake by signing the agreement five years ago, whose provisions are now coming into force.”
