The U.S. embassy in Belgrade has criticized the public attention granted to a convicted war criminal who is seeking the release of the person sentenced for murdering Serbia’s first democratically elected prime minister, the Voice of America reported on Oct. 9.
“It is hard to understand why a convicted war criminal is using public space to promote the release of a person convicted of the murder of the first democratically elected prime minister in Serbia,” a spokesman for the U.S. embassy in Belgrade said in a reaction to a petition calling for the release of prime minister Zoran Djindjic’s assassin.
Dragan Vasiljkovic, a convicted war criminal, has organized a petition for the Serbian president to pardon Zvezdan Jovanovic, a former member of the disbanded Special Operations Unit sentenced for the Djindjic murder.
