Vladimir Cucic, the Serbian commissioner for refugees and migration, said on Oct. 13 that roughly 1,000 migrants in Serbia are currently not staying in refugee camps and that some of them have found accommodation in hostels.

Cucic told Pink TV that between 600 and 700 individuals are staying at hostels, while about 300 are near the Serbian-Hungarian and Serbian-Croatian borders, attempting to cross into the EU illegally.

Commenting on events that took place in Sombor two days ago – when the town dawned covered in posters with the photos and personal information of alleged “profiteers” who are renting out apartments to migrants – Cucic said that charges were filed “against several people operating unlicensed hostels” for migrants, but emphasized that others were legally renting out living space to them.

The commissioner added that there have been no significant issues with the conduct of migrants because “they would not risk committing a crime in Serbia”, aware that criminal behavior would prevent them from leaving the country.
