A member of the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations and a professor at Georgetown University, Charles Kupchan, said in an Oct. 23 interview for Radio Free Europe, that the signal being sent was that the United States saw the Western Balkans as a priority.

Commenting on a decision by the U.S. administration to appoint Christopher Hill as the new ambassador to Serbia, who was a deputy to Richard Holbrooke, the chief U.S. negotiator during peace talks in Dayton, Kupchan said that Hill possessed enormous experience, credibility and access to key actors in Washington.

"I believe you are looking at one of the most experienced individuals with a strong reputation, which I believe is pretty good news for Serbia," Kupchan said, adding that the appointment revealed that President Biden cared about the Balkans.

Kupchan said the appointment would contribute to "a new and sincere effort to roll the ball forward towards the region," particularly for the purpose of "normalizing relations between Serbia and Kosovo" and political progress in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
