Inspectors from the Ministry of Defense visited the Sloboda armaments factory in Cacak at the beginning of the week, the Pistaljka website reported on Nov. 4, adding that the Ministry had been aware of the inadequate storage of explosive and hazardous materials at the factory.

"Inspectors arrived in Sloboda on Nov. 1 and their mission will be to perform a regular, partial, announced probe on the ground in the area of protecting the environment by Nov. 5," a document posted on the website, which Pistaljka said was obtained from a whistleblower, says.

The document states that the director of the Sloboda company needs to write a report on the situation in the area of environmental protection which is regulated by a rulebook on work safety and health, protection from fire and explosions, environmental protection, etc. The factory has also been told to hand over information on the amount and categories of dangerous waste and chemicals along with information on the number of environmental accidents in the period between 2017-2021.

The watchdog also said that it had received information from said whistleblower that ahead of the arrival of inspectors at the Sloboda factory an outdoor fence was expressly erected and barrels with dangerous and poisonous materials were moved behind the fenced off area which had marked off for these materials. Before the visit was announced, said barrels were placed haphazardly in the factory's warehouse in the open, next to a warehouse for explosives, ammunition and other finished products, which could be seen on publicly available satellite images and air footage of the area.
