Epidemiologist: Number of Newly Infected to Drop Slightly over Next Two Weeks

Epidemiologist Predrag Kon has said that over the next two weeks the number of the people infected with COVID-19 is expected to drop slightly, but will still remain “catastrophically high.”

Speaking for the Kurir daily newspaper, Kon added that the number of infected began rising on June 27, and continued to grow until seven weeks ago.

He also said that the epidemiological situation would be much better had the measures proposed by the medical part of the Crisis Headquarters been implemented.

“This [the epidemic] will continue the next year, and what will come after that and when it will subside, I cannot say. The virus has persisted across the planet and we will have a hard time getting rid of it. We have to be vaccinated; those who do not get this are jeopardizing the health of the entire nation,” Kon said.

Asked why the number of the vaccinated people who had died due to the infection are not being published, Kon said that the matter was discussed at the session of the Crisis Headquarters in September, and that a letter concerning the issue had been sent to the institutions in charge on Oct. 10, but that there is still no answer.

“I sought [the answer] from the prime minister, the Ministry of Health, the Batut Institute, everywhere. There has been no answer. There is another matter at issue here: it is expected here to get the answer straight away, as if we are the most developed country in the world. On the other hand, however, we have been waiting for the response for far too long,” the epidemiologist said.
