Dr Milanko Sekler, a virologist, said on Dec. 8 that according to South African researchers the newest variant of the coronavirus, the omicron, was twice as easy to spread, compared to the delta strain, but the symptoms it caused appeared to be "by far milder."
"It seems as the symptoms are nearly non-existent, there's no pneumonia or temperature, it looks like a brief spell of common cold, and the most notable clinical symptom is serious fatigue that can take a few days. The encouraging sign is that patients are hospitalized two to eight days, and many develop no symptoms at all," Sekler said in an interview with the Serbian Broadcasting Corporation (RTS).
The doctor explained the omicron death rates were "stagnating," which was very important, given the enormous number of hospitalizations. More than 75 percent hospitalized in South Africa require no oxygen support whatsoever, Dr Sekler said.
