A member of the Covid Crisis Headquarters, Dr Predrag Kon, said on Dec. 20 that the Serbian government’s response team had yet to decide whether to permit New Year’s Eve parties, nor did it suggest new restrictions for a safer holiday season.
“No one in the Covid response team has ever supported or approved of New Year Eve’s partying. There won’t be a single epidemiologist to do so now, at least on the team. The fact is that if we can either act proactively or wait until numbers soar again, and then take steps. Needless to say, being proactive is far more rational, and there will be a smaller price to pay,” Dr Kon said in an interview with the Serbian Broadcasting Corporation.
The epidemiologist recalled that under the current anti-Covid regime, gatherings involving more than 500 people are not allowed. He did say that the situation was improving, but warned that the Covid-19 omicron variant would spread faster with foreign visitors coming in en masse.
Dr Kon was explicit that the number of new cases would inevitably go up in the second half of January.
