Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Dec. 31 that preserving peace and stability in the region, energy and improvement of the healthcare system were the key challenges the country would face in 2022.
Vucic told the holiday edition of daily Vecernje Novosti da he was worried by the situation in the region and "external pressures," whereas he was "completely calm, happy and content" where the Serbian economy was concerned.
"Over the last two years, Serbia has really been the most successful in Europe. We ended 2021 with a total gross domestic product (GDP) of 53 billion euros. When I became prime minister, GDP was 33 billion euros. All that generations have done and built over the past decades was worth 33 billion euros, while in the last seven years alone we have created an additional 20 billion euros," said Vucic.
He reiterated that the so-called "Serbian world" was not Serbia's official policy but that "care for the Serbian people" was. "There is nothing bad in that and no one can criticize that. What is the problem with our giving Niksic (Montenegro) two million euros? And it wasn't the Serbian world when we gave five million to Srebrenica or Drvar (Bosnia and Herzegovina) 1.3 million," said Vucic.
