The Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), Tonino Picula and Vladimir Bilcik, on Feb. 8 called on Montenegro’s leaders to start forming a new cabinet and initiate the election of a new parliament speaker as soon as possible, stressing that Montenegro required a predictable and stable majority in the parliament and a pro-EU government which would lead the country on its EU path.
“We will back the political decisions that will rely on the EU standards and respect the EU values, while reflecting the will of the citizens. Finally, a membership in the EU is the desire of most of Montenegro’s citizens,” it is said in a joint statement by Picula and Bilcik.
The two MEPs said they had been continually following political developments in Montenegro, noting they hailed the recent peaceful changes in line with the Constitution and encouraged all to continue respecting democratic processes, principles and standards.
Picula and Bilcik stressed that paving the way toward “a stable parliamentary majority and Montenegro’s progress in the reform process are pivotal,” noting that “there should be no more time-wasting.” “Political inactivity restricts the country’s reform agenda and thereby its ambitions of joining the EU. Montenegro is the most advanced among the EU candidate countries and has already been integrated in NATO,” according to the joint statement.
