Farmers Seek 2017 to be Declared Year of Natural Disaster
The Initiative for the Survival of Serbia’s Farmers will stage protests in several towns across the country on Aug. 9 by driving agricultural machinery and tractors to warn of “the humiliating situation in the agricultural sector and ignorance of relevant institutions.”
Demands of the farmers gathered in the Initiative include sunflower price per ton of EUR700, RSD 170 per liter of fuel at all gas stations for the upcoming fall season and at least three fill ups per card and two fill ups for agricultural machinery on a daily basis.
The Democratic Party has backed the Initiative’s protests, saying that with its direct interference and ban on export of sunflower the government has caused disturbances in the market and a drop in sunflower price, while drought has drastically reduced sunflower production. According to the party, even bigger problem is posed by the inadequate agricultural policy which, the Democrats say, will result in a drastic reduction of the number of farms.
The Democratic Party said that the government should declare a natural disaster in the drought-stricken areas and provide appropriate assistance accordingly.
