At 8 a.m. on Aug. 10, farmers driving tractors and other agricultural machinery rallied in Novi Sad, blocking the city’s downtown area and insisting they would not disperse until their demands were met.
The protesters spent the night before in front of Vojvodina’s government headquarters – also known as the Banovina building – where several tractors from throughout the province joined them.
The farmers have made three demands. First, that the lowest producer price for sunflower be set at EUR700 per metric ton. Second, that the price of fuel for fall fieldwork be set at RSD170 throughout the country with a minimum allowance of three daily fuelings per fuel card and two daily fuelings of power tools. And third, that farmers be provided blue diesel and that fuel taxes be waived for spring planting.
According to the protesters, the Ministry of Agriculture has already responded to their demands but not to the protesters’ satisfaction.
