The former rector of the University of Belgrade, Ivanka Popovic, has said that the University of Belgrade has been again included in top 500 world universities by Academic Ranking of World Universities, also known as the Shanghai Ranking, mainly owing to a number of peer-reviewed research published in highly-cited scientific journals such as Nature and Science.
Speaking to the Aug. 16 issue of Belgrade daily Danas, Popovic said the presence of Serbian scientists on the highly-cited researchers list had contributed to the University of Belgrade ranking in 2022. She recalled that no Serbian scientist had been on this list in 2021, while academic Petar Seferović of the Belgrade Faculty of Medicine had been included in the 2022 ranking.
“The number of peer-reviewed research published in highly-cited journals increased which contributed to a better ranking of the University of Belgrade in 2022,” Popovic said.
According to the Shanghai Ranking, which annually scrutinizes more than 2,500 institutions and publishes the best 1,000 universities in the world, the University of Belgrade ranked among top 600 in 2021, while it was in top 300 in 2016 and 2017.
