On Aug. 19, the Parliament of Montenegro is expected to hold a vote on confidence in Dritan Abazovic’s government due to the signing of a ‘fundamental agreement’ with the Serbian Orthodox Church. Projections on the outcome of the vote are ambivalent.
The number of votes necessary to topple the government is 41 out of the assembly’s total of 81, but the motion for the no-confidence vote was made by 36 MPs. These MPs come from the ranks of the Democratic Party of Socialists, the Social Democratic Party, the Social Democrats, the Liberal Party and the Democratic Union of Albanians.
It is possible that the vote will be decided by the Democrats behind former parliament speaker Aleksa Becic, who hold nine seats in the assembly. On Aug. 17, the Democrats and the coalition surrounding the Democratic Front submitted their own motion for a vote on confidence in parliament speaker Danijela Djurovic and the dismissal of the current Cabinet, which will be discussed at the Sept. 2 session of Parliament.
The no-confidence initiative to be considered by the assembly on Aug. 19 is the third such motion in the last eight months.
