The European Union (EU) regrets a decision by the authorities in Serbia to cancel or postpone a pan-European LGBTIQ event, the EuroPride, promising to follow new developments, while supporting equality and dismissing any form of discrimination.

“We regret that Serbia has announced to cancel or postpone the EuroPride that it had initially decided to host in Belgrade, this September, and would welcome further clarifications. We will closely follow the issue, hoping for a way to be found to hold the EuroPride safely and in peace,” a spokesperson for the European Commission, Ana Pisonero, said on the eve on Aug. 28.

“The EuroPride has been advocating the equal rights of LGBTIQ people across Europe for many years, giving a voice to those that are often discriminated because of their sexual orientation. These are fundamental rights for the EU and that we expect our closest partners to uphold,” Pisonero went on to say in a release that the EU Delegation to Serbia and the EU ambassador, Emanuele Giaufret, carried on Twitter.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Aug. 27 that the EuroPride would be “cancelled or postponed,” in consultation with Prime Minister Ana Brnabic and most of her ministers.
