General Elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BETAPHOTO/Mirjana Vujovic Djurak)

A general elections was held in Bosnia and Herzegovina on Oct. 2, where citizens cast their ballots to choose new members of the Presidency, the president of Republika Srpska, members of the parliament of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the National Assembly of Republika Srpska, the parliament of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the assemblies of ten cantons in the Federation.

The domestic public is focusing on the election of the triumvirate Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, whose Bosniak and Croat members are elected in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina as a single electoral unit, and whose Serb member is elected in Republika Srpska as another electoral unit.

The contenders for the Bosniak Presidency member are Bakir Izetbegovic of the Party of Democratic Action and Denis Becirovic of the Social Democratic Party of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who has the support of other opposition parties in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Zeljko Komsic of the Democratic Front and Borjana Kristo from the Croatian Democratic Union of Bosnia and Herzegovina are running for the Croat Presidency member.

Voters from Republika Srpska had a choice of five candidates for the Serb member of the Presidency, with Zeljka Cvijanovic of the League of Independent Social Democrats and Mirko Sarovic of the Serb Democratic Party as the front runners. Cvijanovic previously served as president of Republika Srpska while League of Independent Social Democrats leader Milorad Dodik served as the Serb member of the Presidency and is now running for president of Republika Srpska.
