The BCG vaccination of newborns who were mistakenly given saline instead of the anti-tuberculosis injection is successfully under way throughout Serbia, the health minister’s office has announced.
“By the end of the day Thursday [Nov. 3], a total of 133 children had received the vaccine at one of the vaccination centers in the country. In Belgrade, 92 babies have been vaccinated so far without any adverse effects. The Belgrade clinic offering the vaccine has scheduled a total of 430 appointments, four of which were skipped by parents,” the press release said.
The Ministry of Health added that 44 health clinics outside the capital have been providing the vaccine, which is normally only administered at birthing centers. The clinics have vaccinated a total of 41 babies so far, ten of which displayed temporary adverse side effects.
The report is part of the promise made by new Health Minister Danica Grujicic, who pledged to provide the public with detailed weekly updates regarding the progress of BCG vaccination throughout the country.
